Investing in India, from wherever you are

Kalpa Investments helps NRIs invest in Indian mutual funds through NRE and NRO accounts, with remote KYC and support that works across time zones.

Can NRIs invest?

Yes, and it is more straightforward than most people expect

Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin can invest in Indian mutual funds under FEMA regulations, through an NRE or NRO bank account. As an AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributor, we help you complete the paperwork correctly the first time, and stay available on your schedule, not just Indian business hours.

We do not manage money remotely without your knowledge: every transaction is authorised by you directly with the fund house, and your units are held in your own name.

What you will typically need

  • PAN card
  • An NRE or NRO bank account in India
  • Overseas address proof and KYC, often completable by video
  • A Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) declaration
NRE vs NRO

Two account types, two different purposes

NRE-linked investments

Funded from foreign earnings. Generally fully repatriable, meaning both your investment and any gains can be transferred back overseas, subject to applicable rules.

NRO-linked investments

Used for income earned in India (rent, dividends, and similar). Repatriation is allowed within RBI limits, and TDS typically applies to redemptions.

This is a general explanation, not tax or legal advice. TDS rates, DTAA benefits and FEMA rules depend on your country of residence and personal situation.

Where we help, and where we don't

Honestly scoped, on purpose

What we do

  • Help you choose suitable mutual fund schemes and complete NRI KYC and onboarding
  • Set up and manage SIPs, lumpsum investments, and redemptions on your instruction
  • Coordinate meeting times around your local time zone, and communicate by WhatsApp, call or email
  • Keep your KYC, nominee and bank-mandate details updated as they change

What we refer out

  • Tax planning, DTAA claims and ITR filing: we connect you with a qualified CA, we do not file returns ourselves
  • FEMA and legal compliance specific to your country of residence: this needs a qualified professional, not general guidance
Common questions

What NRIs usually ask first

I already had mutual funds before moving abroad. What do I need to do?

Update your KYC and bank mandate to reflect your NRI status and NRE/NRO account. Existing SIPs generally continue, but the funding account needs to change. We can walk you through this.

Can I invest in every mutual fund scheme as an NRI?

Most schemes are open to NRIs, though a small number of AMCs restrict investment from certain countries (notably the US and Canada) due to their own compliance policies. We will confirm which schemes are open to you before you invest.

Do I need to be in India to complete KYC?

Not always. Many KYC steps can be completed remotely by video or through notarised documents, depending on the AMC and your country. We will guide you through whichever route applies.

Can I redeem and repatriate my investment?

Yes, subject to the account type (NRE or NRO) and RBI's FEMA rules. NRE-linked investments are generally more straightforward to repatriate than NRO-linked ones.
